Alcohol is sometimes used by people to try and help manage symptoms of anxiety and depression, but excessive drinking is likely to make those symptoms worse. Managing your drinking and getting the right support are crucial to good mental health.

Drug and Alcohol Services

Alcoholism is, broadly, any drinking of alcohol that results in significant mental or physical health problems. Excessive alcohol use can damage all organ systems, but it particularly affects the brain, heart, liver, pancreas and immune system. Environmental factors and genetics are two factors affecting risk for alcoholism, with about half the risk attributed to each. Prevention of alcoholism may be attempted by regulating and limiting the sale of alcohol particularly to minors , taxing alcohol to increase its cost, and providing education and inexpensive treatment. Prohibition did not work. The risk of alcohol dependence begins at low levels of drinking and increases directly with both the volume of alcohol consumed and a pattern of drinking larger amounts on an occasion , to the point of intoxication, which is sometimes called "binge drinking". The physical dependency caused by alcohol can lead to an affected individual having a very strong urge to drink alcohol.

The relationship between alcohol and mental health is complex. Some people may drink alcohol to relax or help cope with daily stresses; however, alcohol is a depressant drug 1 that can cause anxiety and increase stress. Alcohol can negatively affect thoughts, feelings and actions, and contribute to the development of, or worsen, existing mental health issues over time. In summary, while alcohol might be a common coping strategy, it is not an effective solution. Alcohol is a depressant drug that can affect our mental health and wellbeing and damage our bodies over both the short and long-term.

While the effects of alcohol can sometimes have a short term positive impact on our mood, in the long term it can cause problems for mental health. Drinking alcohol is linked to a range of mental health issues from depression and memory loss, to suicide. Regular, heavy drinking interferes with chemicals in the brain that are vital for good mental health. So while we might feel relaxed after a drink, in the long run alcohol has an impact on mental health and can contribute to feelings of depression and anxiety, and make stress harder to deal with. The brain relies on a delicate balance of chemicals and processes. Alcohol is a depressant, which means it can disrupt that balance, affecting our thoughts, feelings and actions — and sometimes our long-term mental health.

Screening tools and standardised measures are commonly used to assess clients who may be at risk of alcohol or other drug use. They can identify motivation, dependence, mental health status, quality of life and client risk. Some may also assist clinicians to effectively monitor client progress over time outcomes. Standardised measures should supplement an assessment process, not replace it. Dual Diagnosis: Substance Abuse and Mental Health

When you have both a substance abuse problem and a mental health issue such as depression, bipolar disorder, or anxiety, it is called a co-occurring disorder or dual diagnosis. To make the situation more complicated, the co-occurring disorders also affect each other. When a mental health problem goes untreated, the substance abuse problem usually gets worse. And when alcohol or drug abuse increases, mental health problems usually increase too.

Heavy drinking associated with alcoholism can coexist with, contribute to, or result from several different psychiatric syndromes. As a result, alcoholism can.
