The groundbreaking work on Native American-African contact and ideas of race in early modern times. This volume revises the way we look at the modern populations of Latin America and North America by providing a totally new view of the history of Native American and African American peoples throughout the hemisphere. Africans and Native Americans explores key issues relating to the evolution of racial terminology and European colonialists' perceptions of color, analyzing the development of color classification systems and the specific evolution of key terms such as black, mulatto, and mestizo, which no longer carry their original meanings. Black Indians are Native American people — defined as Native American due to being affiliated with Native American communities and being culturally Native American — who also have significant African American heritage. Historically, certain Native American tribes have had close relations with African Americans, especially in regions where slavery was prevalent or where free people of color have historically resided. Members of the Five Civilized Tribes participated in holding enslaved African Americans in the Southeast and some enslaved or formerly enslaved people migrated with them to the West on the Trail of Tears in and later during the period of Indian Removal. In peace treaties with the US after the American Civil War , the slaveholding tribes, which had sided with the Confederacy, were required to emancipate slaves and give them full citizenship rights in their nations.

Not only does she provide a clear, authoritative viewpoint, but she also incorporates historical context and images to provide support for her claims. This is a book that offers a fresh take on modernistic views, leaving the reader with a unique concept of connection among African, Native, and Jewish American literatures and their impact on early modern and contemporary literature. This book explores how the fiction of African, Jewish, and Native American authors participated in the new contestations of self and history that defined the modern in American culture- valuable contribution to modernist studies. This convincing and solidly argued book constitutes an important and valuable contribution to modernist criticism and will require revision of the categorization of African American, Native American and Jewish American literatures of the early twentieth century.

About this book
