The explanation, Finley-DeVille believes, was down the hill, at the pond the horses drank from. She suspects wastewater from nearby oil and gas production leaked there, where the horses drank it up, poisoned. Just a half-mile from her house, in the town of Mandaree, oil and gas are produced by hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, an increasingly popular approach to fossil fuel extraction that involves injecting pressurized water, sand, and chemicals into the Earth to release the gas or oil within. Now national, state, and local grassroots groups, some led by Finley-DeVille, are calling for change.

The academic literature has lagged both industry and public opinion in measuring and characterizing potential water quantity and quality concerns related to hydraulic fracturing fracking. In this paper, we address this critical emerging environmental and energy issue, providing an overview of the current state of knowledge, with a particular focus on academic journal articles that have been published in the past five years. These studies have generally found that the water quantity impacts of shale gas and tight oil development are, on average, not significantly worse than for their conventional counterparts, though the specific location and timing of withdrawals for energy development matter. On the other hand, recent findings also suggest that the water quality concerns associated with fracking may be more serious than water quantity concerns. The production of crude oil and natural gas from unconventional reservoirs has expanded dramatically in recent years, particularly in the United States. Exploitation of these resources has been facilitated by advances in several technologies, including hydraulic fracturing, directional drilling, and seismic imaging. The first of these technologies, hydraulic fracturing fracking , has raised concerns over potential impacts on water resources, as fracked wells are thought to require more water per unit of energy produced than conventional wells, and the chemicals added to the water and pumped underground with high pressure can be damaging to the environment.

Hydraulic fracturing , also called fracking , fracing , hydrofracking , fraccing , frac'ing , and hydrofracturing , is a well stimulation technique involving the fracturing of bedrock formations by a pressurized liquid. The process involves the high-pressure injection of "fracking fluid" primarily water, containing sand or other proppants suspended with the aid of thickening agents into a wellbore to create cracks in the deep-rock formations through which natural gas , petroleum , and brine will flow more freely. When the hydraulic pressure is removed from the well, small grains of hydraulic fracturing proppants either sand or aluminium oxide hold the fractures open. Hydraulic fracturing began as an experiment in , and the first commercially successful application followed in As of , 2. Hydraulic fracturing is highly controversial.

As oil and gas development increases across the nation, so does public concern regarding the potential environmental impacts of the extraction process. These energy resources are often extracted by a process referred to as hydraulic fracturing fracking. While the hydraulic fracturing process has many safeguards and restrictions to protect groundwater resources, routine sampling and testing of your private well water is recommended in order to determine its baseline quality and to monitor for possible impacts over time. The following resources will provide you with general information regarding hydraulic fracturing, water quality testing guidelines, and frequently asked questions. Environmental Protection Agency. Hydraulic fracturing informally known as hydrofracking, fracking, fracing, or hydrofracturing is a process that typically involves injecting water, sand, and or chemicals under high pressure into a bedrock formation via a well.

One of the concerns raised by the public has been about the millions of gallons of fracking fluid required during the process, and its potential to contaminate groundwater and drinking water sources. Two new studies, published in Trends in Analytical Chemistry and Science of the Total Environment , identify the major organic compounds companies are adding to fracking fluid.

In addition, many oil and gas operations are augmented via injection of hydraulic fracturing HF fluids into the formation. Both produced water and HF fluids may contain hundreds of individual chemicals, some known to be detrimental to public health and the environment. Oil and gas production wastewater may serve a range of beneficial purposes, particularly in arid regions, if managed correctly.

Water pollution guide website: information on sources of pollution and how they can be treated. Sewage is another name for waste water from domestic and industrial processes. Despite strict regulatory control, the Environment Agency data shows that the water and sewage industry accounted for almost a quarter of the serious water incidents in England and Wales in Agricultural processes such as uncontrolled spreading of slurries and manure, disposal of sheep dip, tillage, ploughing of the land, use of pesticides and fertilisers can cause water pollution.

In the US, between 25, and 30, new wells were drilled via hydraulic fracturing also known as fracking from Fracking has stimulated increased production of natural gas reserves and has elevated the US to being the projected global leader in natural gas production. Benefits beyond economics include expanded supply of a cleaner burning, less greenhouse-gas-producing product. Protecting local water supplies, minimizing water use, managing gas venting and disposing of waste products are major environmental concerns related to fracking that many fear are poorly monitored and regulated. Health impact assessment HIA is discussed as a framework for assessing the impact of hydraulic fracturing on water.

Fracking: science needs to catch up with public awareness
