Since its invention by Goss in , grain-oriented GO electrical steel has been widely used as a core material in transformers. GO exhibits a grain size of over several millimeters attained by secondary recrystallization during high-temperature final batch annealing. The question of why the Goss orientation is exclusively selected during secondary recrystallization has long been a main research subject in this field. The general criterion for secondary recrystallization is a small and uniform primary grain size, which is achieved through the inhibition of normal grain growth by fine precipitates called inhibitors. This paper describes several conceivable mechanisms of secondary recrystallization of Goss grains mainly based on the selective growth model.

Modelling and simulation of recrystallization, grain growth, and related phenomena are important tools for the fundamental understanding of microstructural evolution that takes place during the annealing and thermomechanical processing of steel. It is also important for the prediction of engineering properties. This article reviews the structure of the deformed state and describes the changes in the properties and microstructures of a cold-worked metal during recovery stage. It discusses the recrystallization that occurs by the nucleation and growth of grains. The article also reviews the growth behavior of the grains, explaining that the grain growth can be classified into two types: normal or continuous grain growth and abnormal or discontinuous grain growth. It also examines the key mechanisms that control microstructure evolution during hot working and subsequent heat treatment. These include dynamic recovery, dynamic recrystallization, metadynamic recrystallization, static recovery, static recrystallization, and grain growth.
