RN12 Environment and Society is dedicated to advancing the sociological imagination of Environmental Sociology and to foster cooperation with other disciplines. The research network Environment and Society RN12 is the European platform for exchange on research in environmental sociology most broadly and inclusively defined. Since environmental issues partly overlap with several other sociological ones — not least reflected in the social, economic, and ecological pillars of sustainable development — this network also welcomes sociologists from the many areas that partly overlap with environmental issues. Our sociological focus is on areas as diverse as water management, social movements, renewable energies, human-animal relations, food production, processing, trade and consumption , new environmental movements, air and soil pollution, environmental risks, mobility, the role of science and technology in environmental innovation, and vulnerability to natural and technological disasters. RN12 aims to explore issues of environment and society from diverse theoretical, methodological and empirical points of view keeping an eye on practice orientation of sociological research.

Davidson, Stewart Lockie. Back Matter Pages About this book Introduction This book offers a critical analysis of core concepts that have influenced contemporary conversations about environment-society relations in academic, political, and civil circles. Considering these conceptualizations are currently shaping responses to environmental crises in fundamental ways, critical reflections on concepts such as the Anthropocene, metabolism, risk, resilience, environmental governance, environmental justice and others, are well-warranted.

Contributors to this volume, working across a multitude of areas within environmental social science, scrutinize underlying worldviews and assumptions, asking a common set of key questions: What are the different concepts able to explain? How do they take into account society-environment relations? What social, cultural, or geo-political biases and blinders are inherent?

What actions or practices do the concepts inspire? The transdisciplinary engagement and reflexivity regarding concepts of environment-society relations represented in these chapters is needed in all spheres of society—in academia, policy and practice—not the least to confront current tendencies of anti-reflexivity and denialism. Editors and affiliations. Davidson 2 1. PDF | In an era when pressing environmental problems make collaboration across the divide between sciences and arts and humanities.

Chapter 1 ~ Ecosystems and Humans

Geographers uniquely draw from integrated human and physical approaches to understand how environmental change, sustainability and social justice all require attention to interactions between humans and their environments. In our courses and in our research we analyze global environmental change, climate change, ecosystem modeling, environmental justice and health, political ecology, globalization and environment, and land-system science, among many other scholarly traditions. We work in forests, wetlands, cities, oceans, glaciers and food systems. And finally, we teach methods of inquiry that can include spatial analysis, remote sensing, field methods and instrumentation, ethnography, Marxism, and science studies.

Every one of us is sustained by various kinds of natural resources — such as food, materials, and energy that are harvested or otherwise extracted from the environment. Our need for those resources is absolute — we cannot survive without them. Moreover, the same is true of all other species — every organism is a component of an ecosystem that provides the means of subsistence. Collectively, the needs and activities of people comprise a human economy. That economy operates at various scales, ranging from an individual person, to a family, to communities such as towns and cities, nation-states such as Canada , and ultimately the global human enterprise.
