We take the life instincts somewhat for granted in our psychoanalytic theory and practice, the drive to experience, to love, to learn and to grow - the instinctual life force that Freud termed the libido , which he went on to elaborate in regard to the different forms libido takes from infancy through the various stages to adulthood.

Freud's Theories of Life and Death Instincts

Beyond the Pleasure Principle German : Jenseits des Lustprinzips is a essay by Sigmund Freud that marks a major turning point in his theoretical approach. Previously, Freud attributed most human behavior to the sexual instinct Eros or libido. With this essay, Freud went "beyond" the simple pleasure principle , developing his drive theory with the addition of the death drive s , Todestrieb[e].

Thanatos is the Greek personification of death, and some of Freud's followers refer to the death drive by this name. The essay describes humans as struggling between two opposing drives: Eros , which produces creativity, harmony, sexual connection, reproduction, and self-preservation; and the "death drive" what some call "Thanatos" , which brings destruction, repetition, aggression, compulsion, and self-destruction.

In sections IV and V, Freud posits that the process of creating living cells binds energy and creates an imbalance. It is the pressure of matter to return to its original state which gives cells their quality of living. The process is analogous to the creation and exhaustion of a battery. This pressure for molecular diffusion can be called a "death-wish". The compulsion of the matter in cells to return to a diffuse, inanimate state extends to the whole living organism.

Thus, the psychological death-wish is a manifestation of an underlying physical compulsion present in every cell.

Freud also stated the basic differences, as he saw them, between his approach and Carl Jung 's, and summarized published research into basic drives Section VI. If, as Otto Fenichel remarked, Freud's "new [instinctual] classification has two bases, one speculative, and one clinical", [5] thus far the clinical. In Freud's own words, the second section "is speculation, often far-fetched speculation, which the reader will consider or dismiss according to his individual predilection" [6] — it has been noted that "in Beyond the Pleasure Principle , Freud used that unpromising word "speculations" more than once".

Freud begins with "a commonplace then unchallenged in psychoanalytic theory: 'The course of mental events is automatically regulated by the pleasure principle Freud proceeds to look for "evidence, for the existence of hitherto unsuspected forces 'beyond' the pleasure principle.

From these cases, Freud inferred the existence of motivations beyond the pleasure principle. Building on his article "Recollecting, Repeating and Working Through", Freud highlights how the "patient cannot remember the whole of what is repressed in him, and Freud still wanted to examine the relationship between repetition compulsion and the pleasure principle. In spite of that, they are repeated, under pressure of a compulsion".

Arguing that dreams in which one relives trauma serve a binding function in the mind, connected to repetition compulsion, Freud admits that such dreams are an exception to the rule that the dream is the fulfillment of a wish. Freud begins to look for analogies of repetition compulsion in the "essentially conservative Declaring that " the aim of life is death " and " inanimate things existed before living ones ", [23] Freud interprets an organism's drive to avoid danger only as a way of avoiding a short-circuit to death: the organisms seeks to die in its own way.

He thus found his way to his celebrated concept of the death drive , an explanation that some scholars have labeled as "metaphysical biology".

Thereupon, "Freud plunged into the thickets of speculative modern biology, even into philosophy, in search of corroborative evidence" [25] — looking to "arguments of every kind, frequently borrowed from fields outside of psychoanalytic practice, calling to the rescue biology, philosophy, and mythology". Freud then continued with a reference to "the harbour of Schopenhauer 's philosophy"; but in groping for a return to the clinical he admitted that "it looks suspiciously as though we were trying to find a way out of a highly embarrassing situation at any price".

She designates the sadistic component as 'destructive'. One may have made a lucky hit or one may have gone shamefully astray"'. Nevertheless, with the libido or Eros as the life force finally set out on the other side of the repetition compulsion equation, the way was clear for the book's closing "vision of two elemental pugnacious forces in the mind, Eros and Thanatos, locked in eternal battle".

Freud's daughter Sophie died at the start of , partway between Freud's first version and the version of Beyond the Pleasure Principle reworked and published in Freud insisted that the death had no relation to the contents of the book.

You will be able to confirm that it was half ready when Sophie lived and flourished". Ernest Jones considers Freud's claim on Eitingon "a rather curious request On his final page, Freud acknowledges that his theorising "in turn raises a host of other questions to which we can at present find no answer". A queer instinct, indeed, directed to the destruction of its own organic home", [40] Freud's speculative essay has proven remarkably fruitful in stimulating further psychoanalytic research and theorising, both in himself and in his followers; and we may consider it as a prime example of Freud in his role "as a problem finder — one who raises new questions The distinction between pleasure principle and death drive led Freud to restructure his model of the psyche.

With Beyond the Pleasure Principle , Freud also introduced the question of violence and destructiveness in humans.

The instinct persists in the forms of superego and neurosis. Freud's indication "that in cases of traumatism there is a ' lack of any preparedness for anxiety ' Beyond the Pleasure Principle may be Freud's most controversial text.

Jacques Lacan , a self-styled Freudian, called "this extraordinary text of Freud's, unbelievably ambiguous, almost confused". Ernest Jones concluded that "This book is further noteworthy in being the only one of Freud's which has received little acceptance on the part of his followers".

Freud - Death drive, reality principle, and pleasure principle

Juiz de Fora, MG, Brazil. One of the most widespread ideas is that in Die Destruktion als Ursache des Werdens she anticipated the Freudian concept of death drive. However, the specific meaning of her hypothesis is seldom discussed and, in fact, there are fundamental differences between their views. The objective of this article is to discuss some hypotheses formulated by Spielrein in her work in order to better elucidate her concept of death drive. Nesse texto, pretendemos retomar alguns pontos da teoria formulada por Spielrein em seu texto de , tendo em vista melhor elucidar o seu conceito de instinto de morte. The life and work of Russian physician and psychoanalyst Sabina Spielrein has increasingly attracted interest in last few decades, especially since the publication of her letters, diary and other documents by Aldo Carotenuto in However, her theoretical contributions for our understanding of both normal and pathological psychology have taken a back seat to certain aspects of her biography, in particular her personal relationship with Carl Jung.

The tendency inherent in all organic things to return to an inorganic state. According to Freud, the death-drive manifests in the psyche as a tendency toward self-destruction, or more precisely the elimination of tension, which can also be turned outwards, whereby it becomes aggression.

In Beyond the Pleasure Principle , Sigmund Freud employed the ideas of "Eros" and the "death instinct" which is generally called "Thanatos" as psychological concepts. Romeo and Juliet dramatizes the romantic love and tragic death of the two young lovers. However, as the opening of scene 1, Act 1indicates, this drama is full of bawdy or sexual words, representing "Eros. Mahood suggests that "the bawdy has always a dramatic function, " and this becomes clearer with reference to "Thanatos.

He initially described a class of drives known as the life instincts and believed that these drives were responsible for much of our behavior. Eventually, he came to believe that life instincts alone could not explain all human behavior. Sometimes referred to as sexual instincts, the life instincts are those which deal with basic survival, pleasure, and reproduction. These instincts are essential for sustaining the life of the individual as well as the continuation of the species. While we tend to think of life instincts in terms of sexual procreation, these drives also include such things as thirst, hunger, and pain avoidance. The energy created by the life instincts is known as libido. In this later view, he maintained that life instincts were opposed by the self-destructive death instincts, known as Thanatos.
